ENGINEERING

Why ENGINEERING

What is B.E or B.Tech?

Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) is a professional undergraduate engineering degree program awarded to candidates after they complete four years of study in the field. Engineering is one of the most popular courses in India and there are many institutes that offer the course to aspiring students.

For admissions, the most common B.E/B.Tech entrance examinations are JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Along with these national-level entrance examinations, there are many state and private level entrance examinations that the students can attempt for admission to the course. The basic eligibility criteria for B.E/B.Tech is 10+2 with PhysicsChemistry and Mathematics. However, there are additional criteria in every entrance exam and institute. Some of the institutes also conduct admission to their courses on a merit basis i.e., based on marks scored by candidates in their class 12 board exams.

List of B.Tech Specialisations

In India, a BTech degree is offered across various specializations. There are a few prominent specializations, such as:

Computer Science Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

Chemical Engineering

Aerospace Engineering

Civil Engineering

Electrical Engineering

Ceramic Engineering

Electronics & Communication Engineering

Marine Engineering

Metallurgical Engineering

Petroleum Engineering

Electronics & Electrical Engineering

While all these specializations offer bright prospects for students to get into different careers, computer science engineering is probably one of the most sought-after courses nowadays. This is also reflected in the high cut off exam scores that top engineering colleges including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) as well as some of the best central universities command from their respective applicants in order to enroll them for this program.

What is the difference between B.E and B.Tech degrees?

The Bachelors in Engineering (BE) degree program also offers a similar orientation to students as the one offered by a B.Tech program. In fact, such is the degree of overlap in eligibility criteria to colleges, subjects taught recruiting companies and even job profiles offered during placements, that students often wonder whether these are the same. The key difference between these two degree programs is with respect to the course material taught and the orientation of the program. The following table captures the points of differences between these two programs.

Difference between BE and BTech

B.E

B.Tech

BE is more theoretical and knowledge-oriented. It is a study based on theory.

B.Tech is skill/data-oriented. The course is more of application engineering.

The course deals with engineering aspects of science

The course deals with the technical aspects of science

The course is applied to develop innovative equipment and useful technical gadgets in Science and Technology.

The course applies the principles of engineering and technology to modify structures and thereby enhance their quality.

Both BE and B.Tech degrees offer students an opportunity to pursue a career in Engineering. The courses are of a duration of 4-years and are spread across 8 semesters.

There are typically two kinds of engineering programs:

1.       3-year BE/B.Tech after Diploma in Engineering

2.       4-year BE/B.Tech after Class 12

Eligibility Criteria for B.E/B.Tech

The basic eligibility requirement for admissions to any BTech program is:

·         Candidates must have passed the class 12 exam from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects.

·         They must also have secured minimum aggregate marks of 60% in the above subjects combined.

·         Most admissions are done based on the student's performance in the entrance examination.

Please note that the BTech eligibility criteria would vary from institute to institute.

B.Tech Entrance Exams

In India, all technical programs such as BTech, fall under the regulatory purview of the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Admissions to B.Tech programs take place through national-level/state-level/institute-level engineering entrance examinations. The top five engineering entrance exams taken by a large number of students each year are:

·         JEE Main - Conducted by National Testing Agency, JEE Main is the entrance examination for BTech admissions into NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. JEE Main consists of two papers - Paper 1 (BE/BTech) and Paper 2 (BArch/BPlan)

·         JEE Advanced - It is a national-level entrance examination for BTech admissions into IITs. Students have to qualify for JEE Main to attempt JEE Advanced.

·         VITEEE - One of the most popular private institute entrance examinations, VITEEE offers admissions into the BTech courses offered by Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and its various campuses.

·         MHT CET - Through MHT CET, students can apply for BTech admissions into the BTech institutes of the Maharashtra state.

·         TS EAMCET - TS EAMCET offers admissions to students in the Telangana state institutes based on their scores in the entrance examination.

B.Tech Admission Process

All the BTech aspirants need to follow a similar process for admission to any institute. Various stages for BTech admissions are given below:

·         Firstly, BTech aspirants need to appear and qualify for any of the entrance exams for admission to an institute.

·         National level engineering entrance exams such as JEE Main is accepted by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and several other private colleges. JEE Advanced is the entrance exam conducted for admission to IITs.

·         Other than the aforesaid two exams, B Tech Admissions are also conducted through state-level exams such as WBJEE, KEAM, AP EAMCET, TS EAMCET, MHT CET etc. and university/college level exams such as BITSAT, VITEEE, SRMJEEE, UPESEAT, etc.

·         All the engineering entrance exams are conducted in April, May and June every year.

·         After the result declaration of every exam, the counseling and seat allotment process has been conducted by the concerned authorities. During counseling, students must choose college and courses of their choice based on their ranks.

·         After seat allotment, every student needs to visit the allotted engineering college to complete the admission formalities.
